Understanding the Sewer Line Problems Common in Our Area

Sewer lines are susceptible to a variety of issues, and older homes in areas like Swarthmore, Lansdowne, and Wallingford often face specific challenges. Here are some of the most common sewer problems we see:

  • Tree Root Intrusion: This is a major culprit, especially in areas with mature trees. Roots are drawn to the moisture and nutrients within sewer lines and can infiltrate joints and cracks, eventually causing blockages.
  • Pipe Corrosion: Over time, older pipes can corrode and deteriorate, leading to leaks and collapses. This is particularly common in homes with cast iron or clay sewer lines.
  • Ground Shifting: Ground movement, whether from natural causes or construction activity, can put stress on sewer lines, causing them to crack or break.
  • Bellies in the Line: A “belly” is a sag in the sewer line that allows solids to accumulate, leading to blockages.
  • Offset Pipes: Sections of pipe may become misaligned, hindering proper flow.
  • Cracked or Broken Pipes: From age or external forces, pipes can develop cracks or even break completely.

Ignoring these problems can lead to serious consequences, including:

  • Sewage Backups: The most obvious and unpleasant consequence.
  • Property Damage: Sewage backups can cause significant damage to your home and belongings.
  • Health Hazards: Sewage contains harmful bacteria and viruses that can pose a serious health risk.
  • Environmental Contamination: Leaking sewer lines can contaminate the soil and groundwater.

Trenchless Sewer Repair: The Modern Solution for Haverford Township Residents

Traditional sewer repair methods involve digging a trench to expose and replace the damaged pipe. This can be a messy and disruptive process, requiring extensive excavation and potentially damaging landscaping, driveways, and sidewalks. Trenchless sewer repair, on the other hand, offers a minimally invasive alternative. We often recommend trenchless methods for homeowners because of the many advantages:

  • Minimal Disruption: Trenchless methods require little to no digging, preserving your landscaping and minimizing disruption to your property.
  • Faster Completion: Trenchless repairs are typically completed much faster than traditional repairs, reducing downtime and inconvenience.
  • Cost-Effective: While the initial cost may be comparable to traditional repair, trenchless methods can save you money in the long run by minimizing landscaping repair costs and downtime.
  • Long-Lasting Results: Trenchless repairs create a durable, seamless pipe that can last for decades.

Our Trenchless Sewer Repair Methods

At Advanced Drains & Underground Solutions, we offer two primary trenchless sewer repair methods:

Pipe Bursting

Pipe bursting involves pulling a new pipe through the old one while simultaneously breaking apart the existing pipe. This method is ideal for replacing severely damaged or collapsed sewer lines. We insert a bursting head into the existing pipe, which fractures the old pipe outward as the new pipe is pulled through. This method requires access points at either end of the sewer line, but the excavation is minimal. Pipe bursting is effective even when dealing with offset pipes or bellies in the line.

Pipe Lining (CIPP – Cured-in-Place Pipe)

Pipe lining involves inserting a flexible liner coated with resin into the existing pipe. The liner is then inflated and cured, creating a new, seamless pipe within the old one. This method is ideal for repairing cracks, leaks, and corrosion. We begin by cleaning the existing pipe to remove any debris or obstructions. Then, we insert the liner and inflate it using air or water pressure. The resin is then cured using heat or UV light, creating a strong, durable pipe.
