A felt liner saturated with epoxy resin is inserted into the existing pipe, inflated against the pipe wall, and cured in place. The result is a smooth, structurally reinforced interior surface bonded to the host pipe. CIPP eliminates corrosion pathways, seals cracks, and closes off any gaps where roots have entered.

One practical consideration for 4-inch cast iron lines: the CIPP liner reduces the interior diameter by approximately a quarter-inch to three-eighths of an inch, depending on liner thickness. This is generally acceptable for residential drain lines.

Excavation and replacement becomes the correct choice when the pipe is too far gone to support a liner. A fully collapsed section, a pipe with large offset joints where the ends have shifted out of alignment, or a run with multiple breaks over a short distance may not be suitable for lining. In those cases, the affected section is excavated, removed, and replaced — typically with PVC.

When to Reline vs. When to Excavate

The decision is made from camera footage, not from assumptions about pipe age. A 90-year-old cast iron line that has stayed dry and is in a stable soil environment may be in better condition than a 60-year-old line that has been wet and under root pressure for decades. Camera inspection of the full lateral is the only reliable way to assess condition before recommending a repair method.

CIPP lining is appropriate when the pipe holds its round shape, has no sections of active collapse, and the joints are close enough to alignment that the liner can bridge them. Excavation is required when there is structural failure — collapsed sections, joint offsets large enough to prevent liner inflation, or active soil intrusion through a broken pipe wall.
